Background of the Study:
Traditional fishing communities in Ilaje Local Government have long maintained distinct gender roles that delineate responsibilities and social positions. Historically, men predominantly engage in fishing while women manage post-harvest processing and local trade (Adebayo, 2023). These roles have evolved due to socio-economic changes and modern influences, challenging established gender dynamics (Ogunleye, 2024). The interplay between entrenched norms and emerging economic pressures prompts questions about gender equity in these communities (Nwankwo, 2025). As modernization influences traditional labor divisions, community identity and the transmission of cultural values face potential disruption. This study examines the persistence and transformation of gender roles in traditional fishing, assessing how modernization reshapes social identities and affects community structure (Eze, 2023).
Statement of the Problem:
Traditional gender roles in Ilaje’s fishing communities are increasingly challenged by modern socio-economic influences. The longstanding division of labor based on gender is under transformation, potentially leading to social tensions and inequities (Babatunde, 2024). This study explores the evolving roles and examines the impact of these changes on community cohesion and cultural identity (Adebayo, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
To examine traditional gender roles in Ilaje fishing communities.
To assess the impact of modernization on these roles.
To propose strategies for achieving gender equity while preserving cultural traditions.
Research Questions:
What are the traditional gender roles in Ilaje fishing communities?
How are modernization and economic pressures reshaping these roles?
What measures can ensure gender equity without compromising cultural heritage?
Research Hypotheses:
Traditional gender roles significantly influence community dynamics.
Modernization has a transformative impact on established gender roles.
Inclusive policies can balance traditional roles with modern gender expectations.
Significance of the Study:
This study clarifies evolving gender dynamics in Ilaje’s fishing communities, providing insights that will inform community-based interventions and policies aimed at promoting gender equity while sustaining cultural heritage (Nwankwo, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to traditional fishing communities in Ilaje Local Government, Ondo State, focusing exclusively on gender roles. Limitations include potential respondent bias and a reliance on qualitative data.
Definitions of Terms:
Gender Roles: Social expectations dictating behaviors and responsibilities based on gender.
Traditional Fishing Communities: Groups engaged in fishing using established indigenous methods.
Modernization: The process by which contemporary practices replace traditional norms.
